Agrimetrics is a new company which is the world’s first big data centre of excellence for the whole agri-food sector. It will improve access to and integration of data for the sector. As a start-up the company has substantial backing from the UK government for 3 years and is supported by the University of Reading, Rothamsted Research, the National Institute of Agricultural Botany and Scotland’s Rural College.
The successful applicant(s) will be seconded to work full-time for Agrimetrics and will join the platform team responsible for a Hadoop big data platform, a semantic web platform using GraphDB, an Elastic Search cluster, and a set of APIs to access the platform. They will carry out research directed at increasing the resilience of the agri-food sector through the use of linked data in support of the commercial activities of Agrimetrics. Specifically they will maintain and extend ontologies, ETL data to the platform and build API’s that interact with the SPARQL endpoint. They will also have the opportunity to develop new skills in a commercial environment as well as being able to link with academic scientists. A candidate appointed to the more senior role will also carry out the supervision of research students.
You will have:
- Experience of writing code (Python, Java, R) to handle and analyse large data sets
- An understanding of the general principles of computer systems architecture
- A PhD in a relevant area
- An understanding of computer systems architecture
- Experience of writing code to handle and analyse large data-sets
- A willingness to learn new skills flexibly and a desire to work at the interface between academic and commercial environments.
