The School of Humanities, University of Brighton, is pleased to invite applications to its PhD programmes in Linguistics and English Language, Literature, Media and Screen Studies. The School has a developing reputation for research of international standing and offers doctoral students the opportunity to work with specialists and to receive guidance on professional development, including teaching and publication. We would welcome high quality applications in Linguistics and English Language, Literature, Media and Screen Studies, as well as interdisciplinary applications that combine such subjects with Art, Design, History, Creative Practice, Education, Philosophy, Medicine, Sociology or Sports Studies.

There are currently two opportunities for doctoral funding. The first is the AHRC-funded TECHNE studentships. TECHNE provides an outstanding graduate training experience, drawing together the best of traditional scholarship, history, theory and practice in collaboration with 13 world-leading partners, including the Natural History Museum, the Barbican, the BFI and English PEN. Aiming to develop the next generation of researchers, the scheme requires successful applicants to write an original thesis and to develop partnership work with an external organisation. (Further information is available at www.techne.ac.uk.) The second opportunity is the University of Brighton studentship scheme, which focuses successful applicants on the writing of an original thesis. Both schemes offer an annual stipend of approximately £14,296 and cover tuition fees of £4,620 per annum (for full-time students).

The deadline for application to either the TECHNE award or the University of Brighton award is Monday 16 January 2017.
