The School of Mathematics invites applications for a 3 year postdoctoral position (Research Associate) in Analysis. This position is funded by The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and is attached to the Early Career Fellowship of Dr Jonathan Ben-Artzi, entitled “Quantitative Estimates in Spectral Theory and Their Complexity”.

Project Description

The goal of this project is to develop tools to understand the relationship between the structure of spectra of generators of Hamiltonian dynamical systems and rates of convergence for the associated ergodic theorem. It is well known that a spectral gap leads to an exponential rate. However, is it possible to extract a rate when there is no gap? The novel technique to tackle this problem involves estimates of the density of the spectrum near 0. The mathematical tools required include spectral analysis, operator algebras, functional analysis, differential geometry and more. An ability to think “outside the box” will prove extremely valuable.

You will also be involved in the organisation of a major international conference, which is funded as part of the EPSRC Fellowship.

The School of Mathematics

The School of Mathematics has one of the largest and most active groups in analysis in the UK. The group runs an active weekly seminar and regularly hosts visitors from around the world.

Candidates with research interests in spectral analysis, smooth dynamical systems and ergodic theory, and related areas of mathematics are encouraged to apply.

Salary: £31,656 - £37,768 per annum (Grade 6)
