MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology
|Salary:||£27,355 to £38,163|
|Contract Type:||Contract / Temporary|
|Placed on:||11th October 2016|
|Closes:||13th November 2016|
|Job Ref:||LMB 329|
We are recruiting a biological focussed ion beam (FIB) cryomilling specialist to work on the imaging of intracellular structures in bacteria and archaea. This will involve the development and application of new FIB cryomilling procedures for the fabrication of better electron cryo tomography (cryoET) samples. The aim is to describe, identify and modify cytoskeletal structures in bacteria that the group is investigating using many different approaches. MRC-LMB's expanding EM facility provides world-class instrumentation, currently including three 300 kV cryo TEMs and a recent FIB/SEM dual beam instrument for cryo milling.
The applicant should be experienced in the use of high-powered transmission electron microscopes and be able to perform tomography acquisitions, ideally using cryo techniques (cryoET). Furthermore, experience with FIB cryomilling would be highly desirable. You should be an enthusiastic individual with a PhD in a biological or biophysical/physics subject or due to complete doctoral studies within 6 months of applying and have a desire to work at the interface of structural biology and cell biology.
The successful candidate will be appointed on a three-year fixed-term contract as either an Investigator Scientist or on a Career Development Fellowship / MRC Post-Doctoral Training Scheme. MRC Career Development Fellowship/MRC Postdoctoral Training Scheme is a training and development position for a post-doctoral scientist who has recently completed their doctoral studies, is moving into a new research discipline or has limited experience of key transferable skills.
Starting Salary and position appointed to will be dependent on research experience. The starting salary for Postdoctoral Scientist is £28,007 - £30,791 and for Investigator Scientist £27,355 - £32,648.
The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology is one of the birthplaces of molecular biology and excels at deciphering the molecular mechanisms of life. It provides an unsurpassed environment for both new and established researchers. Scientists are drawn to the LMB from all over the world, creating a lively and international community for the exchange of ideas and technical innovation.
Working for the MRC provides a whole host of benefits including a final salary pension scheme, Benenden Healthcare membership and excellent holiday entitlement. You will also have access to employee shopping/travel discounts, on site sport and social facilities, as well as salary sacrifice cycle to work schemes and childcare vouchers.
