The Fitzwilliam Museum was founded in 1816 and opened to the public in 1848. Today, it houses over half a million works of art and antiquities spanning a period of four thousand years and representing most major civilisations of the world. The collections are curated within five departments: Antiquities; Coins and Medals; Paintings, Drawings and Prints; Manuscripts and Printed Books; and Applied Arts: for an overview see www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/collections. The Museum has an international reputation for excellence in research, exhibitions, education and public engagement. As well as being the principal museum of the University of Cambridge, it is the largest cultural venue in the region, welcoming around 500,000 visitors a year. It is also the lead partner of the University of Cambridge Museums, a partnership of eight University Museums and the Botanic Garden.
The Telephonist/Receptionist provides the first point of contact for many visitors and telephone callers to the Museum, providing a full telephone and mail room service for all Museum staff. There will also be a requirement to order and distribute stationery and provide support for a range of museum functions.
We are looking for the following skills and abilities: excellent telephone manner and clear communication skills, ability to assimilate large amount of frequently changing information, demonstrable knowledge and practical experience of switchboard operation and reception duties, computer literacy, including email, WORD and Excel, reliability and punctuality, flexibility including willingness to provide leave cover and interest in and commitment to the work of the Fitzwilliam Museum and the cultural sector.
