Associate Professor in Demography

We have an exciting opportunity for a full time Population Scientist to work as an Associate Professor for 4 years working on demography projects at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. This post is a great opportunity for a talented academic with relevant skills and a commitment to population research, which will allow the successful candidate to work with some of the world’s research leaders in the field of demography and health.

The job offers a range of opportunities in research, teaching and management in the Population Studies Group. The successful candidate will be expected to build their own portfolio of research projects as well as having an opportunity to join other research projects undertaken by the group. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to supervise PhD and MSc students and teach on our two world leading MSc courses in Demography and Health, and Reproductive and Sexual Health Research, and to help with developing Distance Learning versions of the courses taught face to face at the School.

Applicants must have a first degree in science or a social science subject and a PhD in demography or a related discipline (for example, but not limited to, population studies, epidemiology, social statistics), experience in writing grants and conducting demographic research, a strong publication record, the ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary scientific team and excellent written and oral communication skills in English (including presentation at international meetings and report writing). Experience of managing scientific projects and a good understanding of modern statistical packages and their use in demographic analyses is essential.  Further particulars are included in the attached job description.  

The appointment will be based in London in the Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health in the Department of Population Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The appointment is available from 1 January 2017 for 4 years initially. The appointment will be on the Academic Pathway Grade 8 scale £53,477 to £61,380 per annum inclusive depending on qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the USS Pension Scheme is available.
