Faculty: Faculty of Science
You will join the Macrobird research group led by Dr Gavin Thomas on a European Research Council funded consolidator grant. The project focuses on modelling phenotypic evolution of species traits in birds at broad phylogenetic and spatial scales.
You will work closely with the current research team including two PGRA’s, one postdoctoral research associate and a PhD student. The research assistant will help to compile and process high-resolution morphometric data on bird bills using 3D white-light digitization and plumage colour using visible and UV spectrum digital photography. Note that the work is based at the Natural History Museum at Tring, Hertfordshire (http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit/tring). You will play a significant part in generating a unique and comprehensive database of bird traits.
The trait data will contribute to the broader project goals of understanding how and why evolutionary rates vary on the tree of life and shape large-scale trends in the temporal, phylogenetic and geographic distributions of biological diversity.
Further information on the Macrobird group can be found at http://macroevolution.group.shef.ac.uk/
You will have a good honours degree (or equivalent experience) in biology or another relevant subject. Experience of working with museum collections and large databases is desirable.
