Wolfson is the largest graduate college of the University of Oxford. It was established in 1966, and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Presently it consists of around 60 Governing Body Fellows, 49 Research Fellows, 56 Junior Research Fellows, and over 600 Graduate Students, drawn from around the world, who are studying for masters degrees or doctorates. Total membership of the College is around 1800.
Wolfson College is seeking to employ a College Accountant with effect from 1 April 2017 or as soon as possible after that date. Applicants from all sectors are welcome.
The College Accountant reports to the Bursar who is a member of the Governing Body. The Governing Body Fellows are trustees of Wolfson College which is a registered charity.
The College Accountant manages a team of six and plays a key role in processing, recording and reporting all College financial transactions within the framework set by generally accepted accounting standards, external regulatory requirements and College and University policies. He/she is responsible for organizing and processing complex financial data and for ensuring that it is reported accurately in the College Accounting system.
The role requires an in-depth understanding of and contribution to the development of an evolving reporting structure, responsiveness to the impact of changing parameters and a comprehensive knowledge of College activities, in order to reflect the substance of financial transactions correctly in the financial and management reporting system.
Candidates must be qualified accountants with extensive practical post-qualification accounting experience at a senior level. Candidates must have excellent communication skills and must be able to deal sensitively with a variety of people from different cultural backgrounds. Working knowledge of legislative and regulatory changes is necessary in order to keep abreast of College policies, structures, developments and initiatives and to ensure that relevant financial aspects are considered and reported appropriately. Candidates must have good budgeting and financial planning skills and the ability to produce accurate financial data in a clear, informative and concise format. They must be able to think clearly and logically and have strong trouble shooting skills. Substantial managerial experience and strong IT skills are crucial.

The College Accountant’s salary will be between £50,000 and £60,000 per annum, depending on the qualifications and experience. The College offers a generous pension scheme, 39 days of holidays inclusive of public holidays, free parking, subsidized meals, and a voluntary membership in the College Common Room which gives access to sports facilities and College clubs and societies. The post is full time and permanent with a 3 months’ probationary period.
