Postdoctoral Research Associate

University of Edinburgh - College of Science and Engineering, School of Physics and Astronomy

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral position at the Institute for Astronomy, in the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, to work with Prof Catherine Heymans and Dr Joe Zuntz. We welcome applications from everyone irrespective of gender, ethnic group or nationality.

This position is funded by a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). The ERC research programme uses "same-sky" weak lensing and spectroscopic surveys to go beyond Einstein with our theory of gravity. This goal is realised by bringing together experts in theoretical and observational cosmology in one team. Candidates for this post should have one of the following skill sets:

- a strong background in cosmology and experience of statistical and computational analysis of cosmological datasets. Interests in different modified gravity theories or constraining galaxy bias through galaxy clustering and/or weak lensing would be an advantage.

- experience in digital image analysis and/or a strong background in the manipulation of large datasets. This will enable preparations for the weak lensing data analysis of LSST by developing analysis methods and software on precursor data sets such as KiDS, in preparation for the first-light imaging and commissioning data from LSST in 2019.

There will be the opportunity for all team members to join the Kilo-Degree Survey consortium (KiDS) and the LSST Dark Energy Science Consortium.

The appointment will be for three years, nominally starting in October 2017 with earlier/later start dates possible and welcomed. Informal enquiries may be made to Prof. Catherine Heymans ( and Dr Joe Zuntz ( Applications must be made online, supplying a CV with bibliography, plus a research proposal of up to three pages. Letters of recommendation from three referees should be sent directly by email to before the closing date.

Closing Date: 04 January 2017 at 5pm GMT
