Chair in Synthetic Chemistry

Lancaster University - Chemistry

As part of the growth of Lancaster University Chemistry Department we wish to appoint a Professor of Synthetic Chemistry to lead the synthetic chemistry research grouping and develop synthetic chemistry research and teaching at Lancaster. The chemistry department achieved an overall ranking of 82% 3*/4* and was rated 10th in the UK on output quality in REF 2014 and has groups active in related areas of chemistry in the synthetic, analytical and spectroscopic and computation groups.

Applications are invited from scientists working across the whole spectrum of synthetic chemistry in the broadest sense, especially those who cross traditional boundaries. Your research interests (while likely to be applied to real-world challenges) should be focussed on the synthesis of new molecules or macromolecules and / or the development of new synthetic methodology (including catalysis). You will be expected to take a lead in the organisation of the research efforts and profile of the synthesis research grouping of the relatively new department which currently covers a wide range of synthetic chemistries (see

Additionally, you should have an active interest in the teaching of synthetic chemistry as part of a modern degree, be keen to develop its profile and able to represent the interests of the synthetic chemistry group at departmental, faculty and university levels.

Research facilities available in the Department include: NMR (including multi-nuclear solution and both 400 and 700 MHz solid state), EPR, mass spectrometry, including high resolution mass spectrometry, X-ray diffractometers, single crystal (Agilent SuperNova dual Mo/Cu source) and powder, steady state and time resolved fluorescence spectrometers, CD spectrometer, AFM and SEM. This equipment is maintained by a team of experimental officers. See

We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies on an individual basis, as well as the Athena SWAN Charter, which recognises and celebrates good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education and research.”

For candidates invited to interview, the Department of Chemistry will provide childcare by a registered childminder in Lancaster by prior arrangement, if required.

Informal enquiries should be directed to either the Head of Department Prof. Peter Fielden (Tel: +44 (0)1524 594748 or the acting head of the synthetic chemistry research grouping Mike Coogan (Tel: +44 (0)1524 592342

We particularly welcome applications from women and black and minority ethnic people for this role in order to increase our staff diversity in this part of the University
