Lancaster’s anniversary lectureships offer a fast track academic career path; the first two years of the appointment will not require any teaching to enable you to focus on building up your research portfolio, and there is a range of expert support to help you progress quickly in your academic career, with potential for accelerated salary and career development.
We are seeking an outstanding computer scientist with a background in either pervasive computing or data science who can help lead Lancaster’s efforts to establish the new field of pervasive data science. Ubiquitous systems increasingly enable us to augment ourselves and our physical world with complex technology eco-systems – creating a future in which we generate huge volumes of data that allows us to gain insight into and interact with our world in new ways to address major societal challenges. We recognise that the emergence of such data-rich environments will require radical new innovation – from the techniques and systems used to capture data through in-situ data analysis and the relationship between physical spaces and the cloud to interaction and presentation of data visualisations in physical environments. This is an exciting new area for both data science and ubiquitous computing with applications in diverse areas including health, productivity, entertainment and smart environments.
We are looking for a strong and collegiate individual who is keen to bring their outstanding competences in pervasive computing or data science to play a key role in shaping this new initiative bridging pervasive computing in the School of Computing and Communications and the Data Science Institute. Successful applicants should have a proven track-record in a relevant area of pervasive computing or data science and a desire to take a leading role in the creation of this new field. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience of developing, deploying and trialling pervasive computing in real-world testbeds. Candidates with a strong systems or HCI background in pervasive computing with an interest in data science are encouraged to apply as are those with direct experience of one or both fields.
This is an opportunity to join a world-leading community of researchers at an exciting time. Data Science at Lancaster is strongly multidisciplinary and a key area of growth for the University with over 70 academics and complements our world-class heritage in pervasive computing. The post forms part of a strategic investment that has seen the University approve over 15 related academic positions in the last 12 months.
