Applications are invited for a permanent, fulltime position as Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Visual Communication Design at Ngā Pae Māhutonga – The School of Design – within the College of Creative Arts (CoCA) on Massey University’s Wellington Campus. The level of appointment will depend on qualifications and experience. With a legacy of over a century in design education, Ngā Pae Māhutonga is acknowledged as providing one of the best educations in design in the Asia-Pacific region. The School provides a thriving, well resourced learning environment that fosters research, scholarship, enterprise and creative practice. The contemporary portfolio of courses, faculty of internationally recognised leaders in design research and practice, and world-class facilities provide an ideal environment for students to realise their full creative potential. Students are equipped with the research abilities, social responsibilities and pragmatic skill sets that enable them to flourish in the creative industries, win awards, represent New Zealand and hold key positions that define creative thinking in businesses around the world.
Aligned with leading (emerging) trends in design practice and scholarship, Visual Communication Design is the largest design specialism within the School of Design. The appointee will develop and extend interactive offerings within the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculums, meeting critical standards and expectations for the discipline and the industry.
The successful candidate should possess strong human-centered visual communication design skills across a range of media and demonstrate a capacity for conducting original, creative research. Experience in one or more of the following is desired: interaction design, design for information; service and systems design; creative coding; design for virtual and mixed reality. Familiarity with contemporary design research methods/ethnography, design thinking practices, and progressive social, civic and entrepreneurial design practices is encouraged.
A strong research/creative profile is required. Applicants should possess a strong background in professional design practice. While teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate university levels would be beneficial, most value would be seen in a strong vision for research-led teaching and innovative pedagogy.
The successful candidate is expected to maintain an active research practice within their discipline. The College of Creative Arts adopts an inclusive interpretation of research in regard to all domains of creative and performing arts practice, including practices traditionally viewed as professional practice. The school has excellent facilities, and there are many opportunities for funded research.
The candidate will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to service in the form of administration and committee participation, and will be required to take on different roles and responsibilities within the School of Design as needed. An open, collaborative approach and willingness to work across areas and departments of the school, college and university is a priority.
Applicants will have a MFA, MDes, DDes, or PhD in Interaction Design, Interactive Media, Graphic Design, or equivalent degree in a related field from an accredited institution and/or significant industry experience.
