A Doctoral Candidate Position In Mechanics Of Lattice Materials
Developing faster and more efficient transport requires new lightweight materials with enhanced properties, and lattice materials have the potential to fulfil this need. Lattices are interconnected arrays of struts made from any existing solids (polymer, metal, ceramic or glass); however, they possess one major advantage over conventional engineering materials: their architecture can be designed to achieve unique combinations of mechanical properties, such as high strength at low densities.
The objective of this project is to investigate the behaviour of novel lattice topologies. The challenge will be to optimize their geometry to maximize the strength and toughness of the lattice. This will be achieved using a combination of finite element simulations and mechanical testing on lattices manufactured by 3D printing.
The call is open for candidates with a Master's degree in civil/mechanical engineering, applied physics or a relevant discipline. A strong background in structural and solid mechanics is necessary. In addition, experience in both mechanical testing and finite element simulations (preferably with the software Abaqus) are highly desirable. There is flexibility regarding the proportion of testing and simulations in this project and therefore, candidates who have a strong background in one aspect, but are relatively inexperienced in the other are also encouraged to apply. The applicant must fulfil the requirements for doctoral students at Aalto University, School of Engineering. For more details, see: https://into.aalto.fi/display/endoctoraleng/Admission+requirements
The position is at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and may include some work as a teaching assistant in courses. The expected duration of doctoral studies is four years, but a contract is first made for one year, and the extension is subject to advance of studies and research. The salary is according to the salary system of Aalto University.
How to apply
Applications should be submitted online through the link provided below, and include:
- Certified copy of master´s degree certificate and official transcript of records, and their translations, if the originals are not in Finnish, Swedish or English
- Summary of previous research experience (master thesis for example) and a statement explaining the suitability of the candidate for this doctoral position (maximum one A4 page)
All material should be in English and submitted in PDF format no later than Thursday January 5, 2017. Shortlisted candidates may be asked to provide two referees and proof of proficiency in Finnish, Swedish or English, if the applicant is not a native speaker of or educated in any of them. See the languages requirements:
Aalto University reserves the right for justified reasons to leave the position open, to extend the application period and to consider candidates who have not submitted applications during the application period.
For additional information about the project, please contact Assistant Professor Luc St-Pierre and for further details about the application process, please contact HR coordinator Anna-Maija Harju (email: email@example.com).
