The Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics (AFM) Research Group at the University of Southampton is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join our Experimental Fluid Mechanics Research Laboratory. The primary project that you will be involved in is aimed at understanding and correlating the characteristics of a rough surface to the drag experienced by that surface. The aim is to carry out detailed measurements of velocity and surface drag of different scanned surfaces and develop new data reduction and analysis methods to understand the effects of roughness features on drag and flow structure. There will also be opportunities to work on other projects as well as supervise graduate students working on topics in experimental fluid mechanics including turbulent boundary layers, flow control, aeroacoustics, atmospheric flows, Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) applications, and diagnostics development.
The AFM research group is comprised of experts in theoretical, computational and experimental fluid mechanics and our aim is to provide an environment in which these different approaches can be combined and focused on particular topics of practical importance. You will join a vibrant team of other postdoctoral researchers and graduate students working in different areas of fluid mechanics ranging from environmental flows to biomedical applications.
The candidate should have or be close to completing a PhD in the area of turbulent shear flows, ideally in turbulent boundary layers. Experience with experimental work is critical and knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication of models etc is desirable. Strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications and presentations, are essential.
You will join one of the UK’s most dynamic centres for engineering and environmental research and education rated number one for research power in REF2014. We have an excellent record of collaborative research with industry and academic institutions in the UK and abroad. The Faculty has nearly 200 academic staff working in a number of research themes (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/engineering/research/themes.page). We have exceptional research facilities particularly in our state-of-the-art facilities at our new Boldrewood Innovation Campus.
In recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science and engineering we were awarded an Athena SWAN bronze award in September 2013 and have submitted an application for Silver in Spring 2016. The Faculty will give due consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly including part-time and due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy*, onsite childcare facilities and employees are able to participate in the childcare vouchers scheme.
Please contact Professor Bharathram Ganapathisubramani (G.Bharath@soton.ac.uk) for further details about the position.
You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above.
