The LC provides English language training and study skills tuition for all students at the university. Successful applicants should be educated to Master’s degree level, preferably in Applied Linguistics / TESOL or equivalent and hold a professional qualification such as the DELTA. Candidates should be able to demonstrate an interest in areas such as English for Academic Purposes, academic literacies, assessment and/or syllabus and materials design.
XJTLU is a unique collaborative institution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK and Chinese accredited undergraduate degrees. Founded in 2006 through an agreement between Xi’an Jiaotong University and University of Liverpool, the first cohort of XJTLU students graduated in August 2010. The University now has almost 10,000 students on campus in Suzhou and a further 2,000 studying at the University of Liverpool on a “2+2” articulation route. XJTLU aims to become truly research-led, and has recently committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus.
The LC works with the Year 1 committee to provide English language training for Year 1 students, and works with departments to provide English language, study skills and writing training in years two to four. It also provides writing support for postgraduate students as well as overseeing Chinese language support. There are currently more than 135 staff in the LC, which has grown rapidly to become one of the most significant university-level English language centres globally.
XJTLU is located in the Higher Education Town of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), which is 80km from Shanghai and well-connected by high speed rail and road links. SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. It has experienced economic growth rates of over 30% for more than a decade. The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new China, with the historic old town a major World Heritage Site. Greater Suzhou is one of the largest concentrations of economic activity among Chinese cities in terms of GDP ($222 billion in 2014), and SIP offers a high quality of life.
The salary range for the positions is 14,463 – 29,222 RMB/month depending on qualifications and experience. In addition, members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses. The expected starting date is 03 January 2017.
