The University of Birmingham is continuing to make strategic investment across its research base in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. We are now seeking to appoint a post at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level in Human Geography. The post is open to all fields of Human Geography, including applications using quantitative techniques and/or big data methodologies. The successful candidate will join the Human Geography Research Group, which has four research subthemes: Geopolitics, transition and the carceral; Adapting to energy and environmental uncertainties; Bodies, landscapes, materialities; and Urban and regional studies.
Applicants for this post must demonstrate (or showing potential for) international excellence in their respective research area. Evidence of a strong track record in publishing work of the highest academic quality and impact is essential, and (for a senior appointment) a track record of obtaining external research funding. Applicants must have a commitment to delivering excellent teaching and learning in at all levels (i.e. undergraduate, postgraduate, and supervising postgraduate taught and doctoral projects in their area of expertise), and to communicating the relevance and impact of their research to stakeholders. Successful candidates will be involved in administrative tasks, appropriate to their appointment grade, to support delivery of research and teaching within the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Researchers within the Human Geography Research Group collaborate where appropriate with physical scientists within the School and with colleagues across campus. There are thus significant opportunities for interdisciplinary activities. There is an expectation that appointees will engage internationally, building on the strong links already established by the University with European funding agencies and partners (including the European Union’s Joint Research Centre), and through a Global Engagement strategy that has partnerships in Brazil, China, India and North America as well as through Universitas 21.
The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences is an equal opportunities employer and holds an Athena Swan Bronze award. Female and BME staff are under-represented in the School and we would particularly value applications from such candidates. The School welcomes applications from candidates looking for flexible part-time/job share arrangements as part of the appointment. Professor Eva Valsami-Jones is available to discuss the School’s equal opportunities policies (email@example.com).
Interviews will be held on 12th January 2017. Informal inquiries can be made to Professor William Bloss (Head of School; firstname.lastname@example.org) or Dr Julian Clark (Head of Human Geography Research Theme; email@example.com).
