Imperial College London - Department of Mechanical Engineering

Fixed-term appointment available for up to 1.5 years in the first instance

South Kensington Campus

The Mechanics of Materials Division wishes to appoint a Research Assistant to conduct research into tool design and cooling flow analysis for hot stamping at Imperial College London.

The Metal Forming and Materials Modelling Group is a multidisciplinary research group based in the Mechanical Engineering Department.  It is one of the largest Academic Metal Forming and Materials Modelling research groups in the UK and carries out world-leading research in both fundamental and applied aspects of metal forming and modelling technologies.

The Research Assistant will be involved in a European H2020 research project to develop design concept for water cooled tools for hot stamping and cold die-quenching processes. The project is modelling based and will involve the study of the modelling of coolant flow and heat transfer for the cold die. The outcome of the study will be recommendations for improved tool design for high efficiency and low costs hot stamping of light-alloy panel parts.  The project will require extensive liaison with the industrial partners.  The project is funded though an EC H2020 programme and the project provides an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to work closely with industry.

Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree (or equivalent), preferably a Masters (or equivalent), in an area pertinent to the research subject, e.g. Aeronautical, Automotive or Mechanical Engineering, Design. In addition some background in innovative design and CFD is essential.
