Post Doctoral Research Associate

Open University - Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics; School of Life, Health & Chemical Sciences

Based in Milton Keynes

Temporary contract for 12 months

You will work on a new EPSRC funded project focused on the design and synthesis of novel labelling methodology for the analysis of carbohydrates. Using a combination of chemical synthesis and chemical biology approaches, this project seeks to develop novel small molecule labels akin to those exploited for glycan analysis in the pharmaceutical industry. It is proposed that these fluorescent labels, whilst exhibiting comparable properties in the separation system, will additionally bear functionality which can be exploited to facilitate downstream uses, for example, in the preparation of modified glycolipids which will be used to examine glycan recruitment in protein-carbohydrate binding interactions.

You will be a highly motivated individual with an interest in the synthesis and functional characterisation of carbohydrates to undertake this project. You will hold a PhD (or be near to completion) in Chemistry, Chemical Biology or a closely related discipline. You will have experience of organic synthesis and structural analysis of organic compounds. Experience in carbohydrate chemistry, glycan analysis and HPLC would be advantageous.

Closing date: Noon on 16 December 2016
