University of Dundee and Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities (SGSAH): AHRC-funded PhD Studentship Competition 2017

We are delighted to invite applications for PhD studentships in English, History, Philosophy and Law. The University of Dundee is a member of the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities (SGSAH) and through the AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership collaborates with seven leading Scottish universities to offer world-class doctoral training.

AHRC-funded students will have access to the rich resources available in all Scottish HEIs as well as unique training opportunities developed in partnership with SGSAH’s prestigious and internationally-renowned supporter organisations, including exclusive access to training events, mentoring, talks, visits and funded placements and internships. Our staff and students also work in collaboration with Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design.

The University of Dundee invites applications in the following areas of research excellence:

  • English: Literature from Old English to Contemporary; Theatre Studies from Medieval to Contemporary; Intermediality and Visual Culture; Book History and Print Culture; Creative Writing.  
  • Comics Studies: Comics Theory and Practice; Comics and Adaptation; Comics and Graphic Medicine; British Comics; Comics, Politics and Social Justice; the Superhero.
  • Film Studies: British and American Cinema; Art Cinema; Film Adaptation; Shakespeare on Film; the role of the Screenwriter and Producer; Writing about Hollywood; Practice-led Film and Documentary Projects.
  • History: Global History; Scottish History (particularly seventeenth-century political history, environmental history, nationalism, and diaspora history); European History; American History; Atlantic History; Enlightenment History; History of Empire; and Gender History. University of Dundee and Scottish Graduate School of Social Sciences also offers ESRC-funded PhD Studentship in Economic and Social History.
  • Law: International Law and Governance; Multi-level Governance; Environmental Law and Sustainable Development; Criminal Law and Justice; Corporate Law and Corporate Governance; International Family Law.
  • Philosophy: Continental Philosophy
