The Institute of Classical Studies, School of Advanced Study is now seeking a Librarian of the Combined Classics Library to lead and manage the Classics Combined Library, with overall responsibility for its staff, its collections and its provision of services to readers. 

The School of Advanced Study

The School of Advanced Study, University of London, is a unique institution in UK higher education. Comprising a set of postgraduate institutes and a variety of central academic initiatives, it is located within the Bloomsbury precinct of the University in the intellectual heart of London. It is the UK’s national and international centre for the support, promotion and facilitation of research in the humanities, broadly defined. It does this in collaboration with other organisations, notably the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the British Academy (BA), learned societies and government agencies.

Institute of Classical Studies 

The Institute of Classical Studies (ICS) is the national centre for the promotion and facilitation of research into Classics and related disciplines. Founded in 1953 by the University of London and the Hellenic and Roman Societies, it now provides an internationally renowned research library used by scholars from universities throughout the world. It also runs seminar series, conferences and other events aimed at making the results of new research into Greek and Roman Antiquity available to the widest possible audience.

The Role 

As the Librarian of the Combined Classics Library, you will provide leadership for the Combined Classics Library, maintaining its role as one of the world's leading specialist academic libraries in this field, and enhancing the services it provides to researchers in the discipline. You will take overall responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Library, including the library accomodation and the arrangement of the collection as a whole. You will be responsible for financial planning and budget management and will take charge of the recruitment, line management, training and career development of library staff. As the Librarian, you will also be responsible for developing a strategy for the future of the Library, in collaboration with the Library Management Committee, and in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the University of London and the Hellenic and Roman Societies. 

The ideal candidate will have significant experience of working in an academic or research library and will have substantial knowledge of the academic role of research libraries and developments in the library and information world, in particular electronic developments. A degree in a humanities subject and an appropriate qualification in Library and Information Services or equivalent is an essential requirement. You will have some knowledge of the principles of managing archives and special collections and a willingness to line manage a staff of specialist librarians, assistants and trainees. We are looking for an individual with excellent communication skills, ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines and a commitment to a proactive approach to change, service innovation and career development. 

Please note a degree in a classical subject and a knowledge of Latin and/or Ancient Greek would be an advantage.
