The Sutton Trust was established in 1997 by Sir Peter Lampl, and works to improve social mobility through education. Since 1997 the Trust has funded over 170 research studies and has profoundly influenced the national policy agenda. As a ‘do tank’, the Trust has funded programmes, from early years through primary and secondary school to access to higher education and the professions, helping hundreds of thousands of young people. The Trust has a strong media presence, a popular website, a growing social media presence and organises a number of well attended conferences, seminars and other events each year.
The Sutton Trust has a vacancy for a research and policy manager who will be part of a small team managed by Conor Ryan, Director of Research and Communications. The post holder will also provide support to the Sutton Trust chairman and chief executive as required.

RESEARCH AND POLICY MANAGER
- Programme managing the Trust’s entire research plan, developing and managing projects
- Co-ordination of colleagues and external organisations responsible for individual reports
- Undertaking short pieces of research on improving social mobility, as required
- Ensuring that all Sutton Trust reports are accessible to practitioners and policy makers; editing and proofing reports in readiness for publication.
- Supporting the development of Sutton Trust policy recommendations
- Contributing to accessible briefings for MPs, peers and other policymakers on Sutton Trust research and policy ideas
- Undertaking advocacy work, as required, with MPs’ staff, civil servants, special advisers and other policy makers
- Engaging with stakeholders to keep social mobility at the top of the political agenda
- Developing the content and working with the Digital, Events and Alumni officer to manage the Trust’s policy and research events
- Overseeing the day to day work and encouraging the professional development of the Parliamentary and Public Affairs Officer and Research Fellow
Person Specification: Essential
- Experience of developing research into accessible publications
- Significant experience of project management
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences (including academic and non-academic) and experience in proofreading
- Significant experience of working in a policy environment, with a good understanding of how Parliament and Government works
- Experience of working with, and influencing, senior stakeholders
- The ability to work accurately to tight deadlines
- Commitment to the aims of the Trust
- Personable, flexible and discreet; able to work as part of a small team
- A degree
- Postgraduate qualification including research skills training
- 2 or more years’ experience in education or a closely related field
