Laboratory Manager (dry spectral lab)

Rothamsted Research

An exciting role has been created at Rothamsted Research to set up a new spectral laboratory in collaboration with researchers in ICRAF (Kenya) and the project presents an attractive opportunity to help develop the new analytical techniques and their applications in Europe, Africa and elsewhere.

Rothamsted Research is the Headquarters for the Africa Soil Information Service (AfSIS), which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Rapid and inexpensive types of analyses have been promoted by the innovative use of spectral techniques that work with dry soils and crop tissues using pXRF, MIR and XRD techniques without the need for expensive and time consuming digestion in concentrated acids. It is thought that the spectral analysis of soils can be related directly to those of crop tissues, thus creating a new way of rapidly assessment of the likely crop response to the soil conditions and any added fertilisers. Linking soil conditions from spectral analyses directly to response of crops in terms of growth and nutrient response, including direct spectral analysis of plant tissues, is a whole new paradigm for soil and plant diagnostics that the post holder will develop.

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist to learn and operate the new techniques, teach others, and to act as manager to ensure the efficient use of the excellent facilities that we have at Rothamsted. The successful candidate will have a PhD in soil science, agronomy, environmental science or plant nutrition or equivalent experience in chemical analysis of plants and soils.

The ability to travel to project meetings in Africa is essential to this role.

This full-time role is for a fixed term until 30/11/2018 with a starting salary between £29,842 to £32,315 per annum.

Closing date: 7th December 2016
