DOCTORAL CANDIDATE POSITION in Traffic management in the presence of connected and automated vehicles
We seek a highly qualified and motivated individual with enthusiastic attitude towards interdisciplinary research to conduct Doctoral research in our team. The position is for a period of 1+3 (or 2+2) years, and should start during early 2017.
The gradual appearance of connected and automated vehicles in motorway and urban traffic systems is expected to revolutionise the current concept of mobility. New technologies will have a significant impact on the overall traffic behaviour, as well as will allow the implementation of unprecedented traffic management strategies.
The successful doctoral candidate will conduct research in the development of traffic models, enhancing the state-of-the-art, and in the definition of innovative traffic management strategies. The doctoral candidate will also participate in the development of appropriate simulation tools accounting for innovative features related to connected and automated vehicles.
Within four years, the doctoral candidate is required to 1) complete the doctoral dissertation, 2) finish relevant courses for 40 ECTS credits, 3) work within the frame of research projects under supervision of Assistant Professor Claudio Roncoli, and 4) participate in teaching.
Required background: A Master’s degree in Engineering or related fields, with strong interest in transportation and traffic systems.
Important skills: Mathematical modelling, optimisation and control, traffic simulation, programming skills, fluency in English, scientific writing, active reporting and interaction with project members.

The above mentioned position is located in the Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering research group, in the Department of Built Environment, see http://builtenv.aalto.fi/en/research/spatial_planning_and_transportation_engineering/.
