The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £34,056 - £41,163 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work with Professor Kwang-Leong Choy in the UCL Institute for Materials Discovery.
The research project in which the successful applicant will be involved takes advantage of recent developments in image acquisition and modelling for the study of polymer breakdown from long term exposure to stress voltage. The responsibility of the successful applicant will be to design and develop deposition process for producing non agglomerated novel polymer nanocomposites, exploring recent discoveries in the enhancement of the performance of polymer electric insulators through the inclusion of nanomaterials in their composition.
The project involves strong academic and industrial collaboration. In addition to the duties outlined above, the post holder will be required to present results and reports at progress meetings, prepare papers for publication and contribute to project supervision.
The appointment is funded by the EPSRC for one year in the first instance.
PhD (or about to obtain) or equivalent in Materials Science/Engineering, Materials Chemistry or similar Science / Engineering degree, with background in: thin film and non-vacuum chemical vapour deposition of thin films, fabrication and testing of thin film.
The applicant should have knowledge of research techniques including materials design and selection, dielectric and functional materials, the processing of thin films and coatings, nanomaterials and nanocomposite coatings, non-vacuum chemical based processing methods and chemical vapour deposition, additive manufacturing, and an extended knowledge of materials science and engineering, particularly dielectric properties of polymer nanocomposites, electroceramics and devices. Finally, the applicant should have experience of using the following materials characterisation methods: XRD, SEM, AFM, Raman Spectroscopy, XPS, TG/DTA, FTIR, and electrical testing methods.
Please note, appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6 (salary £29,809 - £31,432 per annum including London Allowance of £2,980 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
