The studentship is aimed at contributing to the project "Drops and liquid jets" undertaken by Prof A. A. Castrejon-Pita’s Royal Society Research Fellowship

The objective of the project is to carry out research within the general theme of drop formation, breakup of liquid jets, drop impact, bouncing and splashing, drop coalescence, and/or drop generation techniques. In order to fully understand the fundamental processes underlying these processes the dynamics needs to be explored within the temporal (nano- to micro- seconds) and spatial (micro-/milli- metres) scales at which these events occur. This requires the development of (ultra) high speed visualisation rigs and the use of high resolution numerical (such as Gerris) and corresponding theoretical models. There is the possibility of developing one of these topics (or more) towards specific applications (particle separation, inkjet control, etc).

The student will focus on the development of an experimental setup to study the formation of drops and breakup of liquid jets, including its computer interface and visualisation rig. Simultaneously s/he will develop the theoretical and numerical tools needed to describe the observations. S/he will be a member of the Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and will be supervised by Professor Alfonso A Castrejon-Pita. Award Value

The studentship covers University/College fees at the level set for UK/EU students plus a stipend (tax-free maintenance grant) of £14,200 p.a. for the first year, and at least this amount for a further two years.

Eligibility

This studentship is available to all applicants, but the University fees are covered only at the UK/EU rate.  Therefore overseas students would have to provide the difference between the UK/EU and the overseas student rates for University fees from some other source, such as a scholarship or personal funds.

Candidate Requirements

Prospective candidates will be judged according to how well they meet the following criteria:

  • A first class honours degree in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics or Applied Mathematics;
  • Experience in fluid dynamics;
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills;

The following skills are desirable but not essential:

  • Ability to programme in Matlab or similar;
  • Ability to programme in Labview;
  • Experience in Laboratory-based research;
