The School of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking to appoint two research associates to undertake research in solar atmospheric physics with the Principal Investigator and other members in SP2RC. You will contribute to a broad programme of work involving the application of plasma-astrophysics, MHD theory and observations to problems in solar magneto-seismology and solar atmospheric dynamics. In particular, you will emphasise leadership of research in either (i) Project 1 on transversal solar MHD waves and oscillations, solar magneto-seismology in small-scale dynamic, i.e. time-dependent, magnetic channels coupling the photosphere to corona; or (ii) Project 2 on MHD wave forward modelling in localised atmospheric waveguides and jets. Key elements of both research projects will also address solar atmospheric heating by MHD waves in dynamic plasmas.
You will provide dedicated support through the head of SP2RC and to the team of Principal Investigators, academics and staff of the Centre. This includes operation of STFC (Science & Technology Facilities Council) Consolidated Grants, related other STFC, EU and industrial grants, monitoring of budgets, liaison with department and faculty financial administrators, organisation of meetings and group documents, travel and provision of general support including web-sites, and internal and external communications.
You will have a PhD, or be close to completion, in solar physics or a related discipline and will have strong research interests in the broad area of solar physics and/ or solar MHD physics with particular application either to time-dependant solar magneto-seismology and plasma heating or forward modelling.
