Research & Enterprise Policy Officer

City, University of London - Professional Services - Research and Enterprise

City, University of London is a global university committed to academic excellence with a focus on business and the professions and an enviable central London location.

The University is in the top five per cent of universities in the world according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and attracts around 19,500 students (35% at postgraduate level) from 150 countries. It is well above the sector average for graduate prospects in most of its subjects, is in the top ten in the UK for starting salaries and is the top university in London for student satisfaction. City joined the University of London federation in September 2016.

In the recent Research Excellence Framework, City made a greater improvement in research quality, per Funding Council research pound, than any other UK university. 40% of its total academic staff are producing research that is world-leading or internationally excellent.

The University has invested in its newly reconstituted research support & enterprise professional service to provide exceptional support to our academic colleagues and to build stronger business relationships with stakeholders and partners regionally, nationally and internationally.

The R&E staff work collegially across the University, interfacing with our five academic Schools and other professional services to deliver both strategic projects and day to day operational services.

The work we do has a number of internal and external dimensions which include inter alia:

  • Supporting the research needs of our academic community and this encompasses the sourcing of research funding, assisting with the application process, facilitating post award management and ensuring the recording of outputs.
  • Assisting our academic colleagues in the pursuit of impactful enterprise activities including the commercialisation of their research outputs and the development of revenue generating activities like short courses and accredited professional development courses.
  • Brokering and facilitating academic relationships with industry, commerce, not-for-profit and voluntary organisations in a knowledge transfer context e.g. through public engagement activities and consultancy opportunities.
  • Mitigating risk and protecting the assets and interests of the University by ensuring we are legally compliant and robustly implementing mandates from funders and regulators e.g. through our research quality, ethics, governance, safety and integrity standards.

We are embarking on an enormous programme of activity to set the stage for City to realise its exciting ambitions in research and enterprise. Accordingly, we are looking for an exceptionally talented and experienced professional to join the existing, dedicated team in this key role.

The post holder will be primarily involved in the development, implementation and maintenance of policies and guidance relating to the management of research and enterprise activities across the institution. The post holder will work closely with the Head of Strategy & Compliance and the Governance and Compliance Manager to ensure that external directives are interpreted and appropriately implemented across the institution and that internal policies and guidance are developed and made available where appropriate. A key project focus for this role will be in supporting City’s engagement with REF 2021.
