The Department of Language and Linguistics is seeking to appoint a 3-year fixed term full-time Lecturer in the field of Sociolinguistics, to cover a 3-year Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship awarded to Dr Enam Al-Wer. The appointed candidate will be responsible for delivering teaching in variationist sociolinguistics at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level and demonstrate high-quality research in variationist sociolinguistics.
The successful candidate will have specialised in sociolinguistics with expertise in variationist approaches. The candidate should demonstrate excellent research in sociolinguistics, showing a good understanding of both methods in sociolinguistic research and how these methods lead to detailed studies of variation in different populations.
The appointed candidate must be able to deliver graduate level modules in Varieties of English, Multilingualism and Language and Gender. Expertise in other areas such as World Englishes would be essential. Teaching in these areas or other sociolinguistic areas of specialisation will also be expected at undergraduate level. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Sociolinguistics or a highly related field, and should also be able to contribute to the supervision of both BA and MA projects in sociolinguistics, as well as contribute to the administration and management of the department. The successful candidate must demonstrate both an ability to offer a transformative education to students and also conduct excellent research demonstrated in publications and future plans for continued productivity.
The proposed start date for the role is 1 September 2017.
