There are four posts available and all are fixed term until December 2020. The commencing salary will be on the grade 9 salary scale for Administrative Professional and Managerial (APM) Staff, together with USS benefits, if required:

The normal expectation is that the successful applicant will be appointed to the minimum of the scale with annual increments on 1 October each year (subject to completing six months service).

Main Purpose of the Post

The AgorIP (Open IP) Operation will provide an Open Access Open Innovation Framework, available to academia, University Health Boards and industrial collaborators across West Wales and the Valleys servicing a pipeline of some 300-400 commercial opportunities at various levels of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs).

AgorIP will be led and managed by the School of Management, within the established governance of Swansea University. Research commercialised by the project will be drawn from across the University’s Colleges and partners (such as the Welsh University Health Boards), providing clear separation between project activity and resource, and the researchers involved in development of the technology for commercialisation.

The TTO will lead AgorIP technology transfer activities relating to commercial opportunities identified at Swansea University and beyond, including Health Boards, other Higher Education Establishments (HEIs) using Swansea Innovations Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of Swansea University) as the vehicle for commercialisation. The TTO needs to able understand, assess and influence the inventors by showing leadership in identifying the path to commercialisation.   

AgorIP is an ambitious project to build linkages with IP inventors across Wales with particular emphasis on Universities and Health Boards (UHB), and to commercialise those IPs for the good of the regions. This will require substantial external efforts to build, consolidate and contractually define external relationships and the IPs relevant to the project.

The role of the Technology Transfer Officer (TTO) is to lead and manage a portfolio of commercial opportunities at varying levels of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) using processes to identify, capture, mature and make investable commercial opportunities while moving these opportunities onto a commercialisation trajectory. This will involve interfacing with senior academics, executives and Senior WG Civil Servants to create a vibrant pipeline of commercial opportunities for either license or embodiment in new company formation. It requires the ability to maintain both technical and commercial credibility with the various stakeholders in the commercialisation process, by showing leadership in influencing and resolving conflicts so that everyone’s interest in a successful outcome is aligned. The post also requires definition of who owns the intellectual property and the means by which this IP can be accessed for use by the Project and knowledge of how the opportunity can be contractually transferred to the economy through either a license or spinout. The TTO will primarily operate between TRL level 1 and TRL level 5, although may be called on to support activity at higher TRL levels when necessary.
