The Faculty of Law is a modern, internationally oriented institution with a four-hundred-year-long tradition. The Faculty of Law has over 3700 students and some 350 staff members and is thus one of the largest faculties of the University of Groningen. Its effective quality-control system ensures continuous emphasis on the quality of teaching and research.
Administratively within the Department of Business Law and European Law, the Department of European and Economic Law at Groningen is a high-profile and dynamic research-led group which engages in research in both the classic and more recent areas of European Law. The current research of the department covers subjects such as (but not limited to) the Internal Market; Judicial Protection; Citizenship; Relations between the Union and the Overseas Countries and Territories of the Member States; Rights and Values in the European Union; Privacy rights, particularly in the IT area; Energy Law; Competition Law, and European Environmental Law.
All the members of the Department participate in the research programmes of the Faculty. In particular, the Department plays a major role in the research programme 'Protecting European Citizens and Market Participants'. Various members also participate in the activities of the Groningen Centre of Energy Law.
Teaching in the bachelor's degree programmes of the University takes place in Dutch or in English (depending on the programme), and all the master's level teaching in European Law is in English.

While applications are invited from those active in any field of European Law, an ability and willingness to teach a general course on European Law in Dutch is essential, given the Department's present needs, and an interest in competition law, external relations, or the area of freedom, security and justice would be very welcome.
Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers depending on qualifications and experience a minimum salary of € 3,427 (scale 11 Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) up to a maximum salary of € 5,330 (scale 12) gross a month on a full time basis. The post will be established, for now, for a fixed term period of two years. Towards the end of that period there will be a result and development interview in order to decide whether the appointment may be made permanent.
There are two lectureships and allocation between these posts is negotiable.
Interviews for the position will take place in April 2017.
