Applications are invited for open-rank positions in the Department of English by applicants specializing in one or more areas in applied linguistics. The Department of English is a research-led department that trains graduates for careers as English-language professionals in the fields of translation, media and communication, finance and international business, and language education. Since its inception in 2008, the Department has established four undergraduate programmes of study with a concentration on applied English studies, English literature as well as translation studies. The Department also has a vibrant postgraduate programme of MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and a new MA Mass Media Translation. In addition to Masters programmes, the Department operates a successful research-based doctoral programme, through which the faculty supervise PhD students in their specialist areas.

With a faculty of 15 members and a student body of 300, the Department of English is one of the more established entities in Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. The University is a unique collaborative institution; the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees. The University now has over 10,000 students, who from July 2016 spread across two adjoining campuses. The medium of instruction is English. The University aims to be research-led, and has recently committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus. Academic members of staff enjoy access to a wide range of electronic databases as well as print resources. The Department is housed in the Humanities and Social Sciences Building on the new South Campus, where the new Interpreting Laboratory and Translation Laboratory are located as well.
Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is located in the Science and Education Innovation District of Suzhou Industrial Park. This location is well-connected via nearby airports to cities such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Taipei and Tokyo and via high-speed rail to other major cities in China. Suzhou Industrial Park is only 25 minutes by high-speed rail from Shanghai. Suzhou Industrial Park is a major growth zone, catering to operations run by nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. Greater Suzhou is now one of the largest concentrations of economic activity in China in terms of GDP. The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals, UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens, and the I.M Pei-designed Suzhou Museum attracting millions of tourists annually. SIP offers an excellent quality of life with high environmental standards. The nearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views, by day and by night, and there are a variety of shopping facilities, international and local restaurants, entertainment hubs and a great nightlife. Suzhou is also home to four international schools.
The salary range for the position is 23,850 – 29,222 RMB/month (Lecturer), and 29,664 – 40,497 RMB/month (Associate Professor). In addition, members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses.
