Research Associate - Software Engineer in High Performance Computing (part-time)

University of Bristol - Merchant Venturers' School of Engineering

A Research Associate - Software Engineer position is available in the High Performance Computing research group at the University of Bristol. This position is associated with the £3M EPSRC-funded ‘Isambard’ GW4 Tier 2 project:

Based in the Computer Science department, you will help support Isambard, the world’s first large-scale, production, 64-bit ARM-based supercomputer. This role will help port and optimise scientific codes to the wide range of computer architectures that make up the Isambard system. These include the main 64-bit ARM system, as well as Intel Xeon Phi (KNL) and GPUs (NVIDIA Pascal P100). The role will include liaising with other Isambard researchers and RSEs, supporting the project’s mission to provide a national service supporting the rigorous evaluation of ARM-based supercomputing. You will have a background in computer science and high performance computing, with demonstrable experience in scientific software development and optimisation. The ideal candidate would have a strong track record of porting and optimising to the ARM architecture, as well as to Xeon Phi and GPUs. A strong track record in scientific dissemination, including publishing in international-quality venues, is also desired. In addition, you will have excellent written and spoken communication skills including the ability to explain and share deep concepts.

You will hold a PhD in a relevant area of computer science, or expect to be awarded one soon.

The post is offered on a part time (17.50 hours per week), open ended basis with funding up to March 2020.

For informal enquiries, please contact Simon McIntosh-Smith (

It is expected that interviews will be held shortly after the closing date with a start date as soon as possible, ideally in April 2017.
