IP & Commercialisation Consultant (Maternity Cover)

City, University of London - Research and Enterprise

City, University of London is a global university committed to academic excellence with a focus on business and the professions and an enviable central London location.

City is in the UK’s top twenty (Guardian University Guide) and the world’s top four per cent (Times Higher Education World University Rankings). City attracts around 19,500 students (35% postgraduate), is well above the sector average for graduate employability in most subjects, is in the top ten in the UK for starting salaries and is second in London for student satisfaction. City joined the University of London in 2016.

In the last REF, City doubled the proportion of its total academic staff producing world-leading or internationally excellent research.

Led by President Professor Sir Paul Curran, City has made significant investments in academic staff, estate and systems and continues to work towards realising its vision of being a leading global university: it has recently agreed a new Vision & Strategy 2026.

City has invested in its newly reconstituted research support & enterprise professional service to provide exceptional support to our academic colleagues and to build stronger business relationships with stakeholders and partners regionally, nationally and internationally.

The R&E staff work collegially across City, interfacing with our five academic Schools and other professional services to deliver both strategic projects and day to day operational services.

The work we do has a number of internal and external dimensions which include:

Supporting the research needs of our academic community and this encompasses the sourcing of research funding, assisting with the application process, facilitating post award management and ensuring the recording of outputs.

Assisting our academic colleagues in the pursuit of impactful enterprise activities including the commercialisation of their research outputs and the development of revenue generating activities like short courses and accredited professional development courses.

Brokering and facilitating academic relationships with industry, commerce, not-for-profit and voluntary organisations in a knowledge transfer context e.g. through public engagement activities and consultancy opportunities.

Mitigating risk and protecting the assets and interests of the University by ensuring we are legally compliant and robustly implementing mandates from funders and regulators e.g. through our research quality, ethics, governance, safety and integrity standards.

This post sits within the Knowledge Transfer Team and is fixed for 1 year to cover a period of maternity leave. This is an exceptional and rarely available opportunity and would suit a candidate who is looking to engage with the process of commercial exploitation. The post holder will work closely with other members of the KT team, the Contracts Managers and Research Support professionals to harness inventive disclosures and ensure that City has a healthy pipeline of exploitable opportunities.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have a background in IP management and will have some experience, alignment or interest in one or more of the academic disciplines at City.

Additional Information

City offers a sector-leading salary, pension scheme and benefits including a comprehensive package of staff training and development.

Closing date for applications: 11.59pm on 4th April 2017

Actively working to promote equal opportunity and diversity.

Academic excellence for business and the professions.
