The Antennas and Propagation group of Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering is looking for a highly motivated and talented Doctoral Candidate to join their research work.
The fifth-generation (5G) cellular wireless will be ready before/around year 2020. The 5G cellular enables diverse new concepts of connected services in the society, one of which is a smart city. The smart city ensures ubiquitous connectivity through the 5G cellular to facilitate efficient resource use, including electricity, heat and water. In the development of smart cities, however, seeking both the energy efficiency and 5G cellular coverage may have conflicting implications to each other.
The doctoral study therefore tackles this problem by
- Experimentally studying the 5G cellular radio coverage inside energy efficient buildings
- Designing connected energy-efficient buildings together with building material vendors and a city authority, and finally
- Devising novel measures for ensuring the cellular coverage in smart buildings
The study will involve interaction with a number of Finnish industries committed for the development of smart cities.
Associate Professor Katsuyuki Haneda leads the Antennas and propagation group, which has been involved into a number of EU FP7 and Horizon 2020 projects about 5G physical layer studies and hence is known internationally to scientific and industrial research communities. Applications of the developed knowledge and experimental facilities about 5G cellular to other industries and society are one of the key research missions of the group.
- Master's degree or equivalent in radio engineering
- Electromagnetic wave propagation, especially interaction of waves with materials
- Radio frequency instrumentation and field measurements
It is advantageous if the applicant has the following knowledge and skills:
- Physical layer 5G radio communications, especially millimeter-wave and multiple-input multiple-output radios
- Microwave and millimeter-wave antenna and circuit designs and their measurements
- Statistical signal processing and filtering
Salary And Contract Terms
Doctoral Candidate position will be filled initially for one year with possible extensions (expected maximum duration of doctoral studies is 4 years). The starting salary is approximately 2400 €/month and it will increase with performance over time. We prefer that the studies start no later than September 1, 2017.
