The School of Life and Medical Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire is seeking to appoint a full-time permanent Lecturer to offer academic student support in areas such as literacy, field and lab work and pastoral care. This post is open to applicants with an academic background in any of the disciplines in Life and Medical Sciences (Biosciences, Geography & Environment, Nutrition & Dietetics, Psychology, Sports Studies and Sciences, Pharmacy/Pharmacology). The successful candidate will contribute to a new academic support unit within the School to promote the enhancement of the educational experience of students. In addition, they will offer support to staff to engage in effective pedagogic activities principally focusing on student engagement and communication. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the teaching, supervision and assessment of students on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and to engage in research and other scholarly activity, within their area of expertise. As the role is student-facing the appointee will be supportive to students in the role of a pastoral and personal tutor.
You should have experience as a teacher and researcher in higher education, and the ability to effectively engage with students. An interest in HE pedagogy, particularly relating to academic support, is essential.
We are seeking candidates with a professional approach to academic administration as well as effective communication and interpersonal skills. You should be able to demonstrate effective pastoral skills, the ability to develop new initiatives and to work constructively as part of a team.
Experience in lab work, field work and/or consultancy would be an advantage.
- Postgraduate degree in cognate area
- Proficiency in English language
- Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, or willingness to achieve this within 6 months of appointment
- Membership of a professional body
- PGCE (or equivalent)
