Professor/Reader in Structural Biology/Chemical Biology - AC7037ML

University of St Andrews - School of Chemistry, Biomedical Sciences Research Complex

Salary: Professor - negotiable, Reader - £49,772 - £55,998 per annum
Start Date: As soon as possible.

We wish to appoint a Professor or Reader in the area of Structural or Chemical Biology. Applicants with interests in protein crystallography are particularly encouraged.

The School is a partner in EaStCHEM, the joint School between the Universities of Edinburgh and St Andrews. In the recent REF 2014 assessment, EaStCHEM came 2nd in the UK Power ranking and 6th in the Intensity ranking from 32 submissions.

St Andrews Chemistry is a dynamic research environment with ~35 research leaders, ~140 PhD students and 70 PDRAs. Many research groups belong to the Biomedical Sciences Research Complex (BSRC), an adjoined building which harbours a scientific community (~49 PI’s) across the Schools of Chemistry, Biology, Medicine and Physics, conducting interdisciplinary research in biomedicine. The successful candidate will have laboratories within BSRC and have full access to the analytical facilities in the linked Purdie Building (School of Chemistry). https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/bsrc/.

The School has a strong teaching ethos and the appointment will be required to contribute and engage creatively in the teaching at both undergraduate and post graduate levels. We offer undergraduate courses to MChem level and in 2016 St Andrews Chemistry graduated the largest class in our history.

We are the lead partner of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Critical Resource Catalysis (CRITICAT), a PhD training programme directly relevant to the advertised appointment.

Applicants will have an outstanding research profile at their career stage and will be expected to develop a contemporary programme in Structural Biology or Chemical Biology. The successful candidate will already have a well-established track record, demonstrated by high impact publications and an ability to finance their research programme via significant peer reviewed funding.

The School holds an Athena Swan Silver Award, and we are committed to building a more culturally diverse School and encourage applications from female and minority candidates.

Applications are particularly welcome from women who are under-represented in Science posts at the University.

The University of St Andrews is committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all, which is further demonstrated through its working on the Gender and Race Equality Charters and being awarded the Athena SWAN award for women in science, HR Excellence in Research Award and the LGBT Charter;  http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/diversityawards/.
