Grade 8 (Lecturer): £39,324 - £46,924 per annum with potential to progress to £52,793 through sustained exceptional contribution

Grade 9 (Senior Lecturer/Reader): £49,772 - £55,998 per annum with potential to progress to £64,894 through sustained exceptional contribution  

This is an outstanding opportunity for a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Reader post in Machine Learning and Robotics at the University of Sheffield. Working in the Department of Computer Science, you will join our internationally respected Machine Learning Group and work closely with our Sheffield Robotics centre.

The Department of Computer Science is embarking on an ambitious growth strategy following our strong performance in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, in which we were ranked 5th out of 89 computer science departments in the UK.

As Lecturer or Senior Lecturer you will contribute to our internationally leading research portfolio in the Department of Computer Science. You will work on topics relating to the theory and practice of machine learning, and will engage with the Department’s interdisciplinary research agenda by collaborating across discipline boundaries with a particular focus on robotics and artificial intelligence.

You will conduct research to the highest standards. This will include securing research funding, publishing in high impact journals, supervision of research students and assisting on research project management.

As a teacher, you will play a key role in maintaining our reputation for high-quality teaching by designing, delivering and assessing undergraduate and postgraduate level programmes in machine learning and other topics in computer science.

Additionally, a Senior Lecturer/Reader will carry out a significant departmental, Faculty and/ or University administrative role to a high standard, maintain substantial international recognition through an extensive range of professional activities and act in senior roles within the Department/Faculty/University, providing leadership and direction for other University colleagues as appropriate.

You will hold a PhD in Computer Science or a related area. Additionally, those appointed to Senior Lecturer/Reader will need to demonstrate experience of obtaining externally funded research grants as well as evidence of supervising postgraduate students.
