2 PhD Candidate positions in Biomedical Engineering (Ultrasonics)

Job Description
We are looking for a two (2) PhD candidates to work in the field of Biomedical Engineering, in particular in the field of medical high-intensity ultrasonics.

Your research goal will be establishing novel drug delivery concepts or advanced methods for tissue characterization in the field of musculoskeletal diseases and oncology. You will also be building experimental setups and prototypes on weekly basis and use signal, image and 3D volume analyses as your everyday tools. In near or intermediate future, the therapeutic or diagnostic ultrasound methods you develop are expected to be applied in patients.

The work will be done at the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering (NBE) of Aalto University at Medical Ultrasonics Laboratory (MEDUSA) under the guidance of Asst. Prof. Heikki Nieminen. We collaborate closely with University of Oulu, University of Helsinki and University of Toronto.

Requirements
You are a talented problem-solver. You should demonstrate potential on running experimentation, building hardware or experimental setups. You are willing to contribute to your laboratory and environment and to be part of a group/collaboration solving advanced and challenging problems in medicine that have remained unsolved to date.

You should have a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or other relevant field. Analytical thinking and skills/courses in advanced experimental research, physical acoustics, hands-on prototyping or image/signal analysis would be considered as an advantage. Ambition and demonstrated background in problem-solving, hands-on experimentation/setup building, Matlab/Labview/Phyton programming, good interpersonal skills and excellent scientific English are valued.

Salary and contract terms
The expected duration of doctoral studies is four years, but a contract is first made for one year, and the extension is subject to advance of studies and research. The expected starting salary for a PhD candidate is approx. 2400 €/month and follows the university salary system. The position will be filled as soon as possible. The annual workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1624 hours. The contract includes occupational healthcare. The position will be located at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus.
