Laboratory Technician

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be Grade 7: QAR 183,349 to QAR 225,282 per annum, plus excellent benefits, exclusive of London Allowance.

UCL Qatar is seeking to appoint a Laboratory Technician for its Conservation and Archaeological Materials Science Laboratories. The post is scheduled to begin as soon as possible and run until 31 December 2018.

The laboratories are used by a number of internal research students, staff, and visitors, as well as by professionals from other organisations in Qatar. The post-holder will be responsible for managing the daily operations of the laboratories, supporting the academic and research purpose of UCL Qatar. In consultation with the Laboratory Manager duties include procurement of supplies, instrument maintenance and operation, training and supervision of laboratory users, preparation and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and development and implementation of Health & Safety regulations and procedures.

The post-holder is expected to maintain effective working relationships with UCL Qatar students and staff, as well as external collaborators and to assist as required in undertaking condition assessments, treatments, or analysis of artefacts.

The applicants are expected to hold a Master’s degree in Conservation of Cultural Heritage Objects, as well as experience of at least two of the analytical techniques available in the laboratories (e.g. SEM-EDS, XRF, XRD, FTIR), and of sampling and sample preparation methods for heritage materials. An aptitude and will to expand on their analytical skills is also essential. Experience in health and safety procedures, procurement processes in Qatar, handling budgets, and working internationally are desirable.

The applicants are required to demonstrate an excellent command of both written and spoken English, IT and organisations skills, diplomacy, tact, and sensitivity to cultural difference, and an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
