The University of Dublin, Trinity College, invites applications for the position of L. M. Thapar Chair of Engineering. This is a permanent (full time) position. The successful candidate will spend at least 30% of their time annually at Trinity College Dublin and at least 30% of their time annually through a visiting professorship at Thapar University, Patiala, India.

The post holder will:

  1. Provide leadership in the development of a vibrant research infrastructure at both Trinity College and Thapar University.
  2. They will directly report to the director of TU in this strategic development which will include the areas of physical infrastructure, staffing policy relating to research, mentoring of academic and post-doctoral staff and training of PhD students. 
  3. Initiate a high profile international inter-institutional research group which builds on expertise in TU and TCD. This should be consistent with the strategic research plans of both institutions and align with existing strengths in (1) Sustainable Energy Systems, (2) Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, (3) Communications and Media Processing or (4) Water, Environment and Infrastructure. These themes are understood to include fields in energy, materials, sustainability, transportation, communication, design, computational engineering and other cognate disciplines. The post holder will be expected to be technically expert in one of these areas.
  4. Strengthen Thapar University’s links with Indian industry in order to increase application driven funded research. The chair holder will explore new links, particularly those with potential to lead to joint international initiatives leading to substantial European and Indian funding in collaboration with TCD and other international partners.

It is essential that the successful candidate will be an internationally recognised scholar, have a successful record of collaboration with industry, have a demonstrated ability to raise research funding and have an excellent track record in mentoring of academic staff and post-doctoral researchers and the training and supervision of research students.

Appointment will be made on the Professor’s Salary Scale (110,060€ - 139,501€ per annum) at a point in line with current Government pay policy. The closing date is 12 noon Irish Standard Time on Monday 28th August 2017.
