University College Dublin and Ireland East Hospital Group invite applications for the joint position of Professor/Full Professor of Health Informatics (UCD)/ Director of Knowledge and Information Systems (IEHG). Health Informatics is a rapidly growing multidisciplinary field linking health care with computing. Integrally supported by information science and technology, this domain centres on the formation, modelling, management and sharing of health data and knowledge to support data analytics and decision making in and across health care settings. This complex field is a fundamental means of enabling integration and improving the overall safety, efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery. Taking account of real world settings, a Health Informatics professional has a unique passion for using their knowledge of computing by applying it to a variety of challenges in health and medicine for the benefit of individuals and populations.

The successful candidate will be appointed to a joint position in IEHG  and the following UCD Schools:

  • UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science (PHPSS)
  • UCD School of Nursing Midwifery and Health Systems
  • UCD School of Computer Science

This is a joint academic appointment post. The post holder will be a member of the Management Team within the IEHG and will hold an appointment to UCD at Academic Professorial level and will be jointly funded by both entities. The appointee should be a recognised leader in the field of Health Informatics delivery, whilst also being able to play an academic driving role within the context of the broader eHealth / health informatics subject area within the University. The successful candidate will be expected to drive the health informatics agenda at a hospital group level, while at the same time contributing to the development of the University profile in teaching, research and innovation in this area. As it is essential that the Informatics agenda of the group dovetails and supports that of the national strategy at both acute and community levels, there may be a requirement for some sessional commitment to the eHealth Ireland function.

The successful applicant will assure existing systems at IEHG Hospitals, develop and expand them to full contemporary integrated best installed practice status. The appointee will also build on the existing Informatics programme in UCD and support the wider strategies of the three supporting schools in relation to teaching, research, staff development and outreach. S/he will contribute to academic leadership, and teaching & curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the three Schools. The post holder will enhance and expand undergraduate and graduate education in the three Schools, as well as demonstrate a willingness to develop Health Informatics nationally and internationally.
