Higher Education Funding Council for Wales - HEFCW

HEFCW are seeking an Accountant to join our small, established finance section, which forms part of our Corporate Services team in delivering an efficient and effective service to HEFCW staff and to external stakeholders.

You will be working with and supporting the Senior Accountant and your main responsibilities will be:

  • The preparation of the annual statutory accounts and quarterly accounts; the preparation of annual programme and running costs’ budgets;
  • the re-profiling of budgets twice-yearly, working with budget holders;
  • the production of monthly budget reports and variance monitoring with budget holders; and
  • the authorisation of purchase ledger invoices and accounting journals.

We are seeking either a qualified or part-qualified accountant with experience within an accounts setting and with statutory accounts and budget preparation experience, ideally in the public sector. It is important that you have familiarity of working within a financial environment with established practices and procedures and the ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and to work as part of a team. You will also have the ability to be proactive in resolving problems and queries; with the ability to work and communicate with staff internally at all levels. Strong numeracy skills and strong IT skills are essential. The ability to communicate bilingually in Welsh or English is desirable.

This post is part-time at 22.5 hours per week which should be allocated over either three or four days.
