PhD Studentship - Mixing, Demixing, Melting and Aeration: Thermomechanical Extrusion for Current and Future Materials

Research Description

Thermomechanical extrusion developed by the plastics industry is now a production method of choice by much of the food industry and is used for the production of foods, feeds, conversion for bioenergy and ingredient manufacture. Companies have a wealth of know-how for their products, but this tacit knowledge is severely challenged when dealing with different biomaterials. With new challenges on the horizon, especially the inclusion of proteins into carbohydrate melts, a more detailed understanding of the science behind this complex process is required.

This Ph.D. studentship will investigate the behaviour of mixed biopolymers within the extruder using model systems to understand the role of hydration, mixing and composition at high temperatures and shear regimes.

Terms and Conditions

This research project has funding attached. For UK or EU citizens with residency, it includes an annual stipend at RCUK minimum rates (£14,553 from October 2017) plus industry top up of £1000 per annum and full payment of Tuition Fees. The studentship, without a stipend, is available to EU students without residency. The successful student must submit an appropriately structured thesis based upon their research project within 4 years of first registration.

Applicant Qualification Requirements

The candidate will hold a first honours degree in an appropriate scientific discipline (Chemistry, Food Chemistry, Food or Brewing Sciences, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Science, Biotechnology, Biological Sciences, Natural Sciences, Chemical Engineering or equivalent degree topics)
