Overview Of Role

Rothamsted Research is seeking a suitably qualified Mathematical Modeller, Ecologist or Epidemiologist for work on fundamental and applied aspects of multi-scale monitoring and risk prediction in plant disease epidemiology and pest ecology.

The post-doctoral researcher will combine spatially-explicit population models with monitoring simulators to determine the effect of spatial-layout, sampling frequency and detection efficiency on the accuracy and uncertainty of monitoring networks. Key aim is the quantify the performance of monitoring networks.

Alongside an extensive experimental program the post-doctoral researcher will develop and analyse models as well as use data for model testing.

Key application areas:

  • Early detection of invading pests and pathogens.
  • Ascertaining the absence of a pathogen or pest from an area.
  • Finding as many outbreaks of the pest or pathogen as possible.
  • Determining the value of pest and disease diagnostics in monitoring programs.

The post will be located in a larger team of modeller, mathematicians and statisticians at Rothamsted Research.  This post is available for 3 years with a starting salary normally in the range of £29,842 to £32,315 per annum.
