Postdoctoral Scientist

Quadram Institute Bioscience

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Scientist to join the Gut Health and Food Safety Programme at the Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB).

In 2018, research teams from QIB, the University of East Anglia’s Faculty of Science and Norwich Medical School and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals’ gastrointestinal endoscopy facility will integrate into the Quadram Institute, a new interdisciplinary research institute at the forefront of a new era in food and health research at the heart of the Norwich Research Park. (

The post holder will contribute to a multi-site 5 year project on "Glycoenzymes for Bioindustries" funded by Industrial Biotechnology Catalyst.  Glycoenzymes are responsible for the biosynthesis of all glycans and glycoconjugates and as such provide a rich source of biocatalysts for industrial applications; however, few glycoenzymes are commercially available. This project will translate existing academic work in the production of an expanded toolkit of glycoenzymes suitable for transformational potential in: diagnostics, biologics and nutraceuticals, but with broader applications which can be satisfied via enzyme production and supply partners.

The Role:

The project, led by Manchester University, regroups four UK academic partners (based in Manchester, Norwich - Quadram Institute Bioscience and the John Innes Centre - Newcastle) and industries. At QIB the post-holder will be contributing to the (i) identification of desirable glycoenzymes from gut bacteria, (ii) small-scale production and purification, (iii) enzymatic and structural characterisation and (iv) optimisation of selected glycoenzymes.

The post-holder will work closely with the academic and industrial partners and subcontractors involved in the project, so to deliver novel glycoenzymes which can be directly commercialised as a toolkit for glycoscience and IB applications, and evaluated for novel advanced manufacturing applications.

In addition to the proposed experimental work, the post-holder will contribute to the research by interacting with post-doctoral scientists and PhD students in the Juge Group, writing-up reports and publications, and presenting at relevant meetings and Conferences. The post-holder will also be encouraged to join Public Engagement activities. In addition, they will benefit from regular BBSRC-sponsored training courses in career development and transferable skills.

The ideal candidate:

The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in Biological Sciences (biochemistry/molecular microbiology/cell biology) and have previous research experience in bioinformatics, molecular biology, biochemistry and enzymology of glycoenzymes. Experience in structural biology would be advantageous.

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £30,750 to £37,750 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.  This post is for a contract of three years.
