Postdoctoral Research Fellows in Robotic Navigation, Scheduling, and System Sciences in Agri-Food Technology (4 Posts)

We are looking to recruit up to 4 postdoctoral Research Fellows with research profiles in robotic navigation and mapping, robotic scheduling and planning, or robotics system science and engineering, to join our growing agri-robotics research team.

We are developing autonomous fleets of robots for in-field transportation and logistics to aid and complement human fruit pickers. In particular, the RASberry project will consider strawberry production in polytunnels. Working solutions for autonomous in-field transportation will significantly decrease production costs and be the first step towards fully autonomous robotic systems for berry production. A dedicated mobile platform is being developed, together with software components for fleet management, in-field navigation and mapping, long-term operation, and safe human-robot collaboration in strawberry production facilities.

RASberry is a collaboration between the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) and University of Lincoln. Under this project, more than 10 postdoctoral and PhD researchers form a team to develop robust cutting-edge scientific solutions to address the challenges of in-field logistics and collaboration between mobile robots and human workers.

You will have access to state-of-the-art research farms equipped with industrial standard production facilities, as well as agricultural robots with advanced sensors and tools, including the world-leading Thorvald platform. Through the close collaboration with industry and academic partners, you will be embedded in an international consortium, with excellent opportunities to develop a strong individual research portfolio while being engaged in impactful and exciting research solving real-world problems.

We are looking to recruit postdoctoral researchers with relevant experience and/or a keen interest in a number of research areas, including (but not limited to):

  • Long-term autonomy for mobile robots;
  • Robotic (outdoor) mapping and self-localisation;
  • Mobile robot navigation;
  • Remote management and operations of autonomous systems;
  • Shared autonomy and distributed systems;
  • Scheduling and planning for robotic fleets;
  • Human-robot collaboration;
  • Software engineering in robotics; and
  • Integration and orchestration of robotic systems.

You will be placed at the centre of this exciting project, collaborating closely with other researchers, taking a leading role in the research, development, integration and orchestration of the overall system, with a focus on software development.

Applicants should have or expect to soon obtain, a PhD in a relevant area. You must have excellent mathematical and coding skills (C++/Python, ROS). You will also contribute to the University's ambition to achieve international recognition as a research intensive institution and will be expected to design, conduct and manage original research in the above subject areas as well contribute to the wider activities of L-CAS.
