The Cranfield Water Science Institute has an international reputation in its transformational research and teaching in the science, engineering and management of water. Cranfield houses state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, enabling research to be undertaken in all areas of water science, and in addition operates a unique suite of near industrial-scale piloting facilities that attract funding from across the water sector. Our membrane group is built on a strong heritage of delivering internationally competitive research and we are seeking a highly motivated individual to grow our group and support the delivery of pioneering research funded by the European Research Council.

The project titled, ‘Sustainable Chemical Alternatives for Re-use in the Circular Economy – SCARCE’ seeks to advance knowledge of the basic separation principles underpinning membrane assisted crystallisation, in order to advance technology development and scale-up of membrane crystallisation as a method for resource recovery from wastewater. The successful applicant will develop a direct observation platform, complete with on-line particle size analysis to help resolve the shear force requirements necessary for the harvesting of crystals grown at the membrane-solvent interface. Following laboratory development, process scalability will be evaluated using our industrial scale facilities. The role will also involve collaboration with existing staff and students working in the area, as well as international collaborators.

You will have a PhD (or close to completion) in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental engineering or a related discipline, and a proven ability in assembling laboratory testing equipment, as well as undertaking extensive laboratory based experimental research. A working knowledge of either membrane separation or crystallisation is essential, and experience of the use of non-invasive direct observation methodologies is desirable.
