Research Assistant/Associate in Boundary Layer Ingesting Fan Aerodynamics

University of Cambridge - Department of Engineering

A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering to work on the CENTRELINE EU Horizon 2020 project aimed at demonstrating a ground-breaking approach to propulsion-airframe integration. The concept consists of a dedicated propulsive device that entrains and re-energises the fuselage boundary layer flow in order to directly compensate the viscous drag effects of an aircraft. The main objective of the Cambridge part of the project is to design and test a fuselage propulsor fan at key flight conditions with representative inflow distortions. The research will involve the application of a range of advanced experimental and computational methods. A propulsor design matched to the airframe flow field will be developed and manufactured for low speed testing. The tests of the fan will use prescribed inlet distortions generated by rapid prototyped gauzes to reproduce the ingested flow field at on and off-design conditions. In parallel, high-fidelity numerical simulations of the tests will be developed. It is expected that the researcher will work closely with both academics and research students in Cambridge and project partners at other institutions.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are:

  1. A PhD (or close to obtaining a PhD) in turbomachinery aerodynamics or a related subject.
  2. Experience of a range of experimental methods for aerodynamic testing and knowledge of turbomachinery aerodynamic design.
  3. Experience of using steady and unsteady 3D CFD codes.
  4. Ability to interact with research collaborators, other researchers and technicians, to present and discuss research and to publish research papers.
  5. Ability to organise own time and to independently drive research activities.
  6. Some experience of the following would be beneficial: detailed aerodynamic experiments, rapid prototyping, CFD of complex flow problems.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £25,298 - £30,175 Research Associate: £30,175 - £38,183

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 24 months in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
