Post-doctoral research fellow in Neurophysiology

A post-doctoral research position for a highly motivated scientist is available in the laboratory of Prof. Edgar Kramer at the Peninsula School of Medicine of Plymouth University, UK.

The primary function of the role is to perform collaborative and independent research to study the electrophysiological properties of midbrain dopaminergic neurons and other neurons in the dopaminergic circuit in different mouse models. A variety of electrophysiological, genetic, molecular biology and biochemical techniques will be employed, including extra- and intracellular recordings and fast scan cyclic voltammetry on transgenic mice. The work is expected to significantly enhance our understanding of midbrain dopaminergic system function and should shed some light on the etiology and possible therapy of Parkinson disease and drug addiction.

You will be responsible for the provision of specialist research knowledge and expertise that supports neurophysiological work in mice on the dopaminergic system altered in Parkinson disease patients and drug addicts.

You must already have or you should be able to complete in the next few months a PhD in Neuroscience, Neurobiology, Medicine, and Pharmacology or in another related area. Experience in electrophysiological experiments in the mouse dopaminergic system, in mouse handling and establishing and maintaining an electrophysiological setup is required. Expertise in as many techniques listed above is desirable, and candidates with a strong background in neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases are particularly encouraged to apply. This position also requires that you have good work ethics, analytical and organisational skills, and an ability to multitask and collaborate well with lab members.

This is a full time post working 37 hours per week on a fixed term basis for 3 years. Funding is available for 36 months, and renewal upon the first and second year is contingent on mutual agreement and satisfactory performance.

Our laboratory is part of the new Derriford Research Facility close to Derriford Hospital on the North Campus which will bring together all biomedical research groups and will open in September, 2017. It is close to Plymouth city centre with its attractive cultural scene and coastline with easy access to the dramatic countryside and some of Britain's most beautiful beaches in Devon and Cornwall.
