Underwater Glider/Mechanical Engineer

National Oceanography Centre – Marine Autonomous and Robotic Systems MARS , National Marine Facilities NMF

About the role:

Reporting to the Head of the Glider group within MARS, you will provide operational and mechanical engineering design support to the MARS glider group, as well as more complex mechanical engineering design work for other groups within MARS.

As a Glider Engineer you will be focused on Slocum glider, Seaglider and Unmanned Surface Vehicle USV operations. This includes preparation and mobilisation, piloting and sea-going support and time at sea and at shore-bases. Your role will also involve the maintenance of gliders, unmanned surface vehicles and associated sub-systems and sensors. You will contribute to external relationships with vehicle users, manufacturers and centres and prepare material for knowledge exchange.

As a Mechanical Engineer you will undertake mechanical design work, both within the glider group and more broadly across MARS. This will involve taking designs from initial concept through drawing to production and final testing.

This is a Fixed Term Appointment, available for 3 years offered on NERC terms and conditions and is open to internal and external candidates.


This is a Band 6 position and the starting salary will be £28,200 per annum and depending upon skills and experience, a salary uplift and/or additional allowances may be available for exceptional candidates. Sea time may be required for this role, which attracts a daily allowance.

Hours of Work: 

The hours of working are full time 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

About you:

You will have a degree or HND in an engineering or other numerate subject, or equivalent higher/further education in a related field, with experience in mechanical design and a strong track record of solving engineering problems.

You will be familiar with the principles of designing complex mechanical systems and components, preferably for the marine environment, either in response to a specific brief or to solve a defined problem.

You will be expected to be able to effectively communicate complex engineering concepts, both verbally and in writing.  You will need a good working knowledge of 3D Design Software preferably Autodesk Inventor and should be able to fully dimension and tolerance 2D drawing.

Experience of dealing with external suppliers and getting components manufactured would also be useful. You will ideally have experience in the use of marine instrumentation, and a working knowledge of gliders and/or AUVs. You will be able to plan your own work given broad direction, and be able to work effectively as a member of a team ashore and at sea.

The National Marine Facilities division is one of the three major divisions of the NOC, based at the Southampton site. It is responsible for the operation and management of NERC’s two state-of-the-art global research vessels, the National Marine Equipment Pool and a Marine Autonomous and Robotic Systems MARS group.  

The MARS group operates and maintains the UK’s marine science robotic fleet. The fleet is housed in a new state of the art facility which is ranked as one of the best in Europe. The fleet consists of large propeller driven AUVs, subsea gliders, unmanned surface vehicles and ROVs. This fleet, amongst the largest of its kind, is used by the UK science community and wider stakeholders to address global marine science questions. It operates worldwide from the coast to the deep oceans and the vehicles have been deployed beneath glacial ice tongues in Antarctica, under sea ice in the Arctic and have operated in every ocean in between.

The MARS group is working on UK and EU-funded projects with other partners in the UK and Europe, both research institutes and commercial companies.
